You already know about DxO Mark, the guys that review and rate smartphone cameras. They have handled the P20 Pro, and it has come out in flying colours, outgunning the big bad guys by miles. Let’s have a look.

Huawei P20 Pro Tops The DxO Mark Mobile Camera Chart

iPhone X / Huawei Mate 10 Pro / Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s: 97Google Pixel 2: 98Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus: 99Huawei P20 Pro: 109

It looks like Huawei has learned a thing or two from Nokia’s PureView cameras and have delivered a smartphone that, among other things, puts all those 40 megapixels to great use. DxO Mark describes the Huawei P20 Pro as “arguably the most innovative device we’ve seen in quite some time”. Exciting! While the camera’s performance all round is excellent, because of that 40 megapixel lens, I will share how DxO Mark describes the P20 Pro’s image details and zooming capabilities: It is true that DxO Mark tests don’t always hit the mark (no pun intended) with real life performance, but with scores this high, there has to be something to the Huawei P20 Pro’s camera. It scores 10 marks above the Galaxy S9 Plus, 11 above the iPhone X, and 12 above the Pixel 2. Those margins are huge. There has to be something to it. And as if to prove that Huawei has this camera thing nailed down, the P20 Pro’s sibling, Huawei P20, which doesn’t have a 40 megapixels lens, scored 102 on DxO Mark, still beating back iPhone X, Pixel 2 and Galaxy S9 Plus. Also, having the same DxO Mark score as the iPhone X is another Huawei flagship, Huawei Mate 10 Pro. That’s 3 Huawei smartphones in the top 5 spots of the chart. You can’t tell me Huawei isn’t on to something with smartphone photography. Three’s a charm.

How Did Huawei Pull This Off?

If you snoop around a bit, you will find that Huawei has a R&D centre in….drum roll….Finland! And there are a number of ex-Nokia people running around in there. That explains it. It looks like Huawei have gotten their hands on some of the people who made Nokia’s legendary PureView cameras. I remember that a number of Huawei Mobile staff in Nigeria in recent times were ex-Nokia people too.

And Mister Mobility Is Excited Again

To be honest, I have been quite bored with smartphones in recent times. New models announced tend to be a small upgrade over another, with nothing spectacular to look forward to. But the P20 Pro makes me feel alive again. Here’s a phone worthy of Mister Mobility’s time and attention. And money! I am sure you guys already know what my next smartphone is; don’t you? I should bless myself with a fabulous birthday gift this April. Yessss! Now, where can I place my order already?
